The Treatment of Captain Syverson-Chapter 13: SNAFU
Characters: Captain Syverson, various original minor/supporting characters.
Summary: Sy has some time to think about his past, present, and future while roughing it in the Virginia wilderness which leads him to a revelation about what he really wants…but is it too late?
Need to start from the beginning? Miss an update because Tumblr? Click me!
Word Count: 4.7k
Warnings:  Mild language, mature themes, military and weapon terminology, discussion, and use. (For those who don’t know, SNAFU is a term coined in the military. It’s an acronym for “Situation Normal, All Fucked Up.” And since this is from Sy’s perspective, I thought a military term, as opposed to a therapy term would be appropriate.)
Author’s Note: Despite this being the longest chapter, clocking in at almost 5k, it was one of the easiest to write, and came the quickest. I love writing from Sy’s perspective, and the pure love he has for Shane. I’m hoping to be able to write a bit more of his POV before the story is complete. We’ll see. I apologize if it seems like one long rant about Sy’s feelingsI guess that’s what it is, with various activities peppered in. He can be a sensitive guy, and I wanted to show that.
Disclaimer: Unfortunately for me, Henry is not mine, le sigh, and all mention of him, his characters, any characters from his films, or his precious doggy, Kal, are strictly for transformative and recreational use. I neither ask for, nor accept payment for the work I post on Tumblr or AO3. Unbeta’d because this is for fun and escapism.

Sy was no whimp. That much was certain. Missouri winters had toughened him up more than most men in his battalion and most of the participants in the training he was currently undertaking.
But it was more than that. Sy was uniquely prepared for the elements. He remembered a particularly harsh December night during Christmas break, before he joined the service when he was home alone and had to let the dog out. Fool that he was, he wore no shoes. Greater fool, he'd allowed the door to the back yard to close…and unfortunately, it had a tendency to lock. Which it did. He tried fruitlessly for a while to break back in, but being without a cell phone, he knew he'd have to walk a good distance for help with the lock.
He slipped out the gate and started up to the road, to follow it  to his grandparents a few miles away. The county road wasn't the best kind for walking, particularly barefoot in the late fall, but his feet were soon too numb to feel the gravel and whatever else was lacerating the soles of his feet. After about an hour, he made it there, shivering, knocking frantically and waking his frail old grandparents up to rescue him from his own negligence. He'd regret that until the day he died. Not that they were angry about it. They shrugged it off. His grandma cleaned the blood and dirt from his feet and bandaged the shallowed abrasions. They didn't look too bad, considering the area they lived in and the trash that could have been waiting to carve him up. Then she set about cleaning up Sy's messy footprints from her normally immaculate floor. Grandpa looked all over for their spare keys to Sy's and his mom's house, and finally found them. He lent him a pair of shoes, drove him back home, and let him in the house. After that, Sy found himself eager to spend time outdoors during colder weather. As if determined to build up a tolerance to it in case he ever found himself in such a situation again.
Now, despite the time of year being only late August, it was unseasonably cool, especially at night, as if Christmas was right around the corner, and Sy was wishing more and more that he had someone to cuddle with during the nights he'd be doing cross country training here at the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. He had packed only the essentials for the expedition, a mess kit, bed roll, canteen, modest rations, first aid supplies, et cetera, plus a rope and a tarp for building a shelter. On his person, he had a compass, a topographical map of the park with checkpoints indicated, waterproof, strike-anywhere matches, a hunting knife, a tactical knife, an M17 pistol, and three .9mm clips. He was also given a flare gun to use in case he got stuck for any reason and needed extraction.
On his first night in the wilderness, he'd taken a lot of time falling asleep. Thinking.
He thought about his last week at home. He wondered how Mr. and Mrs. Stevens were doing with Aika. Shane had offered to watch her, and he considered it. He had appreciated her eagerness to help after her…less than enthusiastic response to hearing about this trip. But he decided since Aika had a close relationship already with Fred and Caroline, and she was still getting to know Shane, they'd better be the ones to take her. She understood, and had offered the second reason that since she worked so much, she wouldn't be able to give her the kind of attention she was used to. That had made a lot of sense. He felt like kind of a bad dog parent for not thinking of it, himself.
He thought about the week he'd been here already at the compound. His first day filling out paperwork, he was asked for an emergency contact. He was used to putting his mom…but she wasn't in the best of health, herself. He had nobody. Nobody but Shane. He put her down, instead of his mom. He thought about the seminars on company approved methods of subduing and detaining targets and combatants. He should have taught Shane some self-defense moves before he left. She could handle herself, and she'd proven so, but still. A refresher, or an advancement on one's skills was always a good idea. But he was sure she'd be fine. He thought about her the most in the torturous policy and procedure lecture. What he wouldn't'a given to have her here with him. She would have made everything fun. And she would have been a way better study partner than Keith. Keith, a Navy vet from Little Rock was a good guy…he just…didn't get Sy's jokes. He was a very literal kind of thinker, and it took extra effort for Sy to communicate with folks like that.
Shane, though…he and Shane wouldn't have gotten too much done, study-wise. They would have been…distracted.
As he hiked along the trails to his first checkpoint, he breathed in the clean, crisp air and stopped at the odd overlook here and there. The park was nestled on the outer edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and they were too gorgeous not to appreciate while he was here. He found himself…uniquely emotional. He didn't feel lonely often, but since he'd met Shane, he'd hardly gone two days without seeing her, even if it was for just an hour. She'd love all of this. She'd probably want a tent, and coffee in the mornings, so they wouldn't be able to travel quite as light, but they'd make it work. Maybe one day they'd take a trip like this. Just for fun. No checkpoints. No deadlines. No semi-automatic weapons…well, honestly, he'd probably still bring a gun, anyway. You never did know about people these days, he thought. Of course, that's probably what people think of me carrying a pistol, he also thought…anyway, he was almost to the checkpoint.
Said checkpoint was a big tent, like the ones they sold fireworks out of leading up to Fourth of July. Inside there was a single lane shooting range set up down one half of the tent. On the other half, there were stations set up with dismantled weapons that you had to assemble in a certain amount of time. Someone had beaten him to the range, so he started with the guns. No problems whatsoever. He was familiar more or less with all of the models, or some version of them. When the previous participant, a small blonde woman, had finished on the range, Sy stepped up to the counter.
The attendant reset the target for Sy so he could do a close range shot, then again for mid and long range ones. He shot well, although he still wasn't used to the lighter weight of the SIG Sauer M17s the armed forces switched to back in 2017. They'd offered him an M18 at the compound, but he favored the heaver pistol, instead. Maybe the M18 was more packable, but Sy just didn't feel right firing a weapon that felt like a feather in his hand. If it was up to him, he'd take a Colt Python .357 Magnum Revolver. That, however, was more than just a question of how the firearm felt in his hand. Being out in the wilderness like this made him think back to how it must have been before these lands became civilized and gentrified. Back to the days of the cowboy, Wyatt Earp and the OK Corral. Back when it was just the wild and free land he could pretend it was now. He thanked the attendant, who was writing his name on his targets to take back to the compound along with his graded weapon assembly timesheets, and then was back on his way.
There was an eerie beauty about this unsullied land, he thought, as the dusk fell the second night of the excursion and he began setting up his camp about halfway between the first and second checkpoints, by his estimation. With his fire built and his shelter up, Sy took out some of his rations, cured meat, hard cheese, and some walnuts, and had a light supper before cleaning his gun and turning in while the ground still held some heat from the waning sun, wishing again as the cold set in that his woman was there to warm him.
His sleep was fitful. And he awoke before dawn, from dreams he couldn't remember but which still left him feeling empty. They must have been about her. He was starting to feel regret. The last time he'd seen Shane, he'd said some things that he meant to be selfless. But he didn't mean them. He meant the parts about loving her, of course. But the last thing he wanted was to come home and find her moved on with someone else. He couldn't stand to think about it. As he walked into the next checkpoint area, the range was already set up for close range firing. He riddled the target with .9mm holes and could barely wait until the attendant got the fresh sheet set to mid range before he began firing.
"How about you let me fully clear the lane before you start on the long range target, okay, Syverson?"
"Sorry, man. I'm a little…on edge today. Won't happen again."
The short, sandy-haired buck trotted out to replace the riddled sheet with one more for the long range leg, pulled it down and lacked it in to long range position, then hoofed it back up to safety, sensing the captain's impatience. Sy shot cleanly, but with cold anger, as if the silhouette on the page out there was trying to take Shane away from him. He put two square in the chest, and two in the head without hesitating.
"Man, I've never seen a long range shoot like that! What's the deal, you pissed at an ex, or something?" Sy checked the man's lapel for a name tag.
"Not exactly, Mister…Daniels."
"Call me Jack." they shook hands, and Sy chuckled, questioning.
"I'm Sy. You're name is Jack…Daniels?"
"Yes sir. No relation to the Lynchburg Daniels, unfortunately. Momma wanted to name me after her granddad, and my old man, well, he had no problem with it given his affinity for the spirit."
"A wise man, your dad. Some of my best nights have included Tennessee Number 7." He didn't elaborate, but he was getting very specific flashbacks of drinking games in his kitchen with Shane. And he was gonna have to shake it off before the weapons assembly drill, or else he'd end up putting together an assault rifle backward.
He made it through without any trouble, thank the good Lord. But that didn't mean that his mind wasn't still reeling. He was thinking of Shane and the possibility that she was being courted by Chris Evans look-alikes and young Harrison Ford doppelgangers, and it was making him furious. He was pretty sure that she was about as interested in taking a break as he was, but he couldn't help himself from making the offer under the circumstances. He kicked himself as he made his camp for the evening, not very far away from the third checkpoint, but too far away to get there by dusk when the daily deadline was. He was a shoe in to get there first in the morning, though, if he was reading his map correctly, and he was damn good at maps, if he did say so, himself. And who would bitch at him for bragging out here, anyway. The odd cricket or squirrel? He didn't think so.
It was colder tonight, and he was thankful that he thought to boil some water for his canteen and put it at his feet. He curled his surly, burly body up under the layers of blanket and thermal sheeting. He was almost warm enough…but he still needed something.
His sleep was plagued by strange dreams that he unfortunately remembered tonight. The scene began with Shane in a bright pink dress and matching gloves, dripping with diamonds, like Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She looked so glamourous and beautiful, but she was getting passed from man to man to the tune of Madonna's Material Girl, which was not the correct song, and he knew it in that moment, but couldn't correct anyone, because it was all playing out on the big screen TV in his basement. When he realized this he turned it off and noticed a familiar head of hair on his lap and stroked it, about to say "Hey, sunshine." until the figure sat up and looked at him, and it was Jordan, the PTA, batting his eyelashes at him, and asking, "You ready for bed, babe?"  The therapist leaned in for a kiss, but Sy leaned back, tumbled off the couch and landed on those crutches again, standing right in front of Shane in the lobby of the therapy clinic.
"Hey sunshine." he said warmly. She looked confused.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?"
"Well…I should hope so…it's me. Sy."
"Sorry, not ringing any bells. I'll look you us and see who you're with, though. Usually Heather tells the new patients which therapists they get their first day. What's your last name?"
He felt like he was getting kicked in the gut with a soccer cleat worn by the Incredible Hulk. He answered with defeat.
"Sy's a nickname. Last name Syverson, first name Logan."
"Oh, there you are. Looks like Cory gets to take care of you today. I'll let him know you're ready. As long as you're all done with the secretaries?"
Sy nodded and collapsed to the floor blacking out. When he woke up, his neighbor, Mr. Stevens was standing over him, insisting it was time for him to get ready. He kept handing him things to put on. Pants, a nice shirt, a vest, a light blue tie, a jacket, nice shoes. The whole enchilada. They got out of Fred's car at a little white chapel outside which, his neighbor pinned a small boutonniere of powder blue hydrangeas to his lapel and walked in with him.
"Come on, boy. She'll be here any minute."
Sy was nervous, but excited. He was obviously marrying Shane. But he couldn't remember proposing, or planning the wedding, or an engagement party, or bachelor party, or rehearsal dinner, nothing…but none of that mattered. He heard the first notes of "Here Comes the Bride" and everything faded away, anyway. He began to cry as she got closer. She was moving slowly, he presumed out of nerves. Or perhaps she'd chosen the wrong shoes. It didn't matter. They'd dance the night away barefoot, and make love until dawn. He wished her veil wasn't so thick. He couldn't even see her bouquet. Let alone her stunning face, no doubt smiling as she cried with him. When she stood in front of him, he broke protocol and removed the veil to find Aika in a white dress on her hind legs panting, tongue lolling happily to one side.
"You may now kiss the bride." said the wizened old minister, causing Aika to knock Sy to the ground licking his face until he blacked out again.
This time, he woke to the chirping birds of a mountain morning in Virginia. His campfire long snuffed, his canteen now chilled as his blood. Those dreams…those were traumatic. He didn't want Shane to see anyone else. The thought of seeing anyone else himself repulsed him. Thinking about what his life would have been like if they'd never gotten to work together made him physically ill, and he was terrified that if he didn't act on these feelings, he'd end up with no one but his dog. Why did it take a trip out of state and all these nights of solitude to figure this out? She was all that mattered. He could dig ditches, flip burgers, get a teaching certificate and coach, or teach gym. Whatever. He also liked history. He could think of something if the people at Secure Source couldn't keep him in consistent work. It would be fine. He understood his purpose now. And it wasn't just to do his duty to his country. He'd served proudly for years. He had a new purpose now. And it was her.
He packed up camp in what he was sure was record time and hauled ass to the last checkpoint where the brass should be waiting for finishers. He was the first one there this morning, but he wasn't sure if anyone had made it yesterday. He didn't try to make small talk with the attendant today. He was on a legit mission to get back to his locker at the compound, turn his phone on and call Shane. He fired four shots, but only made two holes on the long range target. One in the chest, one in the head. The attendant was impressed, giving the highest possible grade.
"Man, Syverson. I pray I never do anything to piss you off."
Sy nodded in acknowledgement and went on to the weapons drill booths. Today, there were distracting sound effects playing on a speaker in each booth, and each one was different. Sy ignored the cacophony, pretending it was white noise, and focused on the puzzles at hand, breezing through the new weapons in better time than ever.
As his cards were being scored and turned in for review to Jane Freitag, the administrator over acquisitions and training, he got himself a cup of coffee and a doughnut, and just observed her, tactically, and objectively. She was a redhead with sharp features, freckles, and light eyes. She was slender, but dressed simply, and modestly. The consummate professional. Sy had honestly barely registered her gender, and it wasn't because she wasn't beautiful. She was. Full red lips, lashes for days, and although her clothes didn't exactly accentuate her shape, he could tell he had a decent figure. He just wasn't interested. And would never be interested in anyone but Shane again. Miss Freitag startled him out of his thoughts.
"Mr. Syverson." She beckoned him to the entrance to the tent near her vehicle.
He picked up his gear and coffee and trotted over to her.
"Ma'am?"
"Jane, please."
"Sy, then, for me. What's next on the agenda?"
"Well, you're the first participant across the finish line. I'm very impressed. It seems as though you almost could have finished last night."
"Yes, ma'am, if I hadn't taken a little extra time for sightseeing, I might have made it here by dusk last night. I just haven't had the hustle I had today."
"Well, that's nothing to sneer at. Normally, the deprivation of food, regular water supply, and proper sleeping conditions make participants sloppy. The opposite seems to be true for you, as you've done better at each checkpoint than the one before. Now, let's get back to the compound and get you a proper meal, and a shower, and talk about what's next for you here at Secure Source."
"Yeah, about that. Before we go much further with this, I need to know one thing."
"What's that?"
"I need to know if you'll be able to find me work near enough to St. Robert and the base there so that I don't have to relocate and travel all the time.  I've got a life there, and…it's not something I can just pick up and move on a whim, and I don't want to be away for weeks and months at a time. I know I made this trip work, but I'm praying it didn't already ruin everything." He wasn't going to waste time mincing words. He needed to know right away or else this wouldn't work.
"Sy, with your talent…they're gonna want to put you on the high profile cases. Celebrity security. Concerts, movie premiers, things like that. You'll be wasted as a small town rent-a-cop." there was true concern in her face and her voice as she drove them out of the park and onto the main road to Secure Source's compound.
"If there's a need I can fill, how is that a waste? There's lots of talent in this program. Just 'cause I finished first don't mean I did it the best. And I'm sure most of these folks have the people skills to take them farther'n me. And if you wanna gimme first crack at those, I'll hear ya out. Just…let me reserve the right to turn down the out of town jobs. Especially if they're short notice. And if it takes me away from another security job, I want you to send me a replacement a few days in advance so I can meet 'em, train 'em, and introduce 'em around."
"Seems reasonable." Jane said.
"Well, alright, then. I think we got ourselves a deal. I'll shower up in the locker room real quick, then meet ya in the commissary for a sandwich so we can handle the particulars?"
"Sure, Sy." she agreed as they pulled into the parking structure.
They went their separate ways, Jane to her office, and Sy to the quartermaster to return his supplies and get the key to his locker. He practically danced there, he was so giddy to get to call Shane. He did need a quick shower first, though. Which he took, grabbing some shampoo and soap out of his travel bag. When he got back to his locker, towel around his waist, he replaced the products and grabbed his phone. He sat on the bench between the rows of lockers as it booted up.
When it did, it began alerting him as if it's life depended on it. Three text messages, three voicemails, … and twenty four missed calls. That was odd. Maybe a telemarketer had gotten his number.
He checked the texts first. One was a picture of Aika from Fred, his neighbor, the other two were from Shane…two days ago. The day he went into the park.
Hey, hope you have a great first day of Survivor: Virginia! Lol! Be safe! I love you!
OMG, nutty day today! I'm gonna be doing notes for hours! I'll text you in the morning! <3
And then nothing…he chuckled at Survivor: Virginia, but was a bit concerned. Maybe she'd decided not to waste time texting him if he wasn't going to respond? He didn't know. Maybe some of the calls or voicemails were from her. He'd check before calling.
One from his mom, one from the Stephen's house phone, and the rest were from Fort Wood Therapy. That was weird. He was discharged and didn't have any appointments…surely he wasn't missing any…Shane would have said something. He listened to the voicemails. The first one was from Heather.
"Hey, Sy, it's Heather, Shane's friend here at therapy. Hey, give me a call when you get this. Thanks."
Weird…the next one was from Susan, Shane's boss. In the same tone.
"Captain Syverson, it's Susan DeForrest here at Fort Wood Therapy Clinic. Please give us a call when you get this. Thank you."
Again, weird. The last one was Susan again and far less friendly and measured.
"Mr. Syverson. I don't know what kind of game you're playing, but you need to bring Shane back to work and stop screwing around. One or both of you is in serious trouble. Either you're being hot-lined for abduction or she's fired for not showing up for work. The choice will be hers." and the line went dead.
Sy felt his stomach twist into nauseated knots at Susan's words. Shane hadn't been to work. For how long? He had to call them. He didn't want to think about the horror that might have befallen Shane while he'd been away.
"Fort Wood Therapy Clinic, this is Heather, how may I help you?" Heather said, trying to hide the obvious worry beneath the cordial demeanor.
"Heather, it's Sy, what the hell's going on with Shane? What do you mean, she hasn't been to work, I don't…"
"Let me give you to Susan, Sy. I'm sorry." She added the last two words in a whisper. After a brief moment on hold, Susan picked up.
"So, Mr. Syverson. Finally decided to call us back?"
"Cut it out, Susan." He let her blatant ignorance of his rank slide in favor of getting to the point. "Tell me what's going on."
"Shane left work Monday and hasn't been back since. No one has seen her. Apart from you, I presume. I knew letting her date a patient would come back to bite me. I should never have--"
"Shut up! This isn't about you, and it isn't because of you. And you had no right to tell Shane who she could and couldn't date, anyway. I haven't seen her in about a week and a half. I'm training out of state for a job. I've been away from my phone since Monday, and I just got back to it now."
"She isn't…with you? I assumed…"
"Well, you know what they say, Susan. I'm coming back early if I can manage it. See if I can do something to help find her. Thanks for calling me. I know your intentions weren't the best when you did, but ultimately, it worked out. I may not have found out otherwise, at least until… much later."
He hung up before she could respond. He had to talk to Jane about cutting his training short. This was all his fault. If he had just come to the realization of just how important, how vital Shane really was to him before he left…well he never would have gone in the first place. She was his life now. His world. His future, and his whole heart. Tears stung his eyes as he dressed to meet Jane in the commissary. She'd have to be okay with this. She'd have to understand.
As he got closer to the smell of fry oil, seasonings, and sizzling meat on a griddle, aromas that usually made his stomach grumble with hunger, he had to swallow back the bile that crept up his throat. He found her seated at a small round four-top, already eating a salad. He sat across from her, startling her from whatever she was reading on her phone, and again when she looked at his expression and complexion.
"Sy, what's wrong? You look downright green!"
"Listen, Jane, I'm going to have to leave training early." She scowled at him, but he was more concerned with the putrid smells of boiled egg and onion coming off her chef salad. He had to get this over with quick before he wretched in the middle of the mess hall.
"That's a big ask, Sy. Gonna have to have a reason."
"I just got a call that my girlfriend is missing. I need to go home and help find her."
"Oh…yeah, that's…that's some reason. I'm really sorry to hear that. Any leads so far?"
"No, I just got off the phone with her useless boss and all she told me was that she hasn't been to work since Monday and can't be reached on her phone. I have my suspicions, but I wanna talk to the authorities."
"Okay, well. Maybe when things calm down at home, we can set you up with some online courses like we do for our assets who need refreshers, but are on assignment. I'll approve that for you."
"Thanks," he said, gratefully, "I'm also wondering if the company has any…transportation solutions for me…of an immediate nature?"
"Man, what were your letters to Santa like as a child?"
"Oh, you know, a little red wagon, end of poverty, world peace…that kind of stuff." he grinned his most charming grin.
"Why am I not surprised? Okay, but you have to return the favor somehow, Sy."
"How about, one assignments of your choosing, no questions asked?"
"Hmmm, what about five assignments?"
"Three?" he countered.
"Done." they shook hands across the table. "I would have settled at two." she smirked.
"I would have done ten." he winked at her as he turned to retrieve his belongings from his bunk and locker. He had a plane…or perhaps a chopper to catch.

The conclusions involving cost and risk of using manual hand tarps and Semi-Automatic Tarps For Sale lead to overwhelming justification to invest in the higher upfront cost but lower overall lifetime cost of a Fully Automated Roll Tarping System which in the end is a far better value for productivity, efficiency, safety, and cost.

Cruel, Cruel Summer: Chapter 5
Read chapters 1-4 here
There were two masked men in the stairwell, one with a semi-automatic weapon, the other with a Glock, both guns pointed straight at them. “Put the phone down Detective.”
Deeks slowly lowered it from his ear. He could still hear Eric calling for him as one of the men snatched it away and smashed it on the floor. “I’ll take yours too Agent,” the first one said, holding out a hand for Kensi’s phone.
She handed it over keeping Katrina behind her as she did so. “Whatever is going on here, you don’t need Katrina for it.”
“Well originally we didn’t, but thanks to this fun little mix up, we’re going to have to insist you all come with us. Quietly. Down the stairs.”
Kensi pushed Katrina in front of her and Deeks brought up the rear, very aware of the gun barrel that was level with his spine. This wasn’t as bad as last year’s vacation; it was so much worse. Apparently the hotel staff members weren’t the only ones confused about whose room was whose.
Katrina had gotten it wrong when she’d said they were looking for overdrives and passcodes. What they really wanted was the Overwatch passcodes. They were the only passcodes of any real value to someone outside of NCIS. Other systems required you to be physically at the Mission, but Overwatch was accessible anywhere.
They reached the bottom of the stairs and were shoved into the back of a van. The windows had been blacked out and when Deeks looked for the door handle he found it had been removed. He met his partner’s eyes. Her face looked as grim as his own probably did. She had her arms wrapped protectively around Katrina who was sobbing.
One of their new kidnapping friends, the one with the semi-automatic, joined them inside, his gun trained on them as the van started to move. “Listen man,” Deeks said, “whatever you want, you only need one of us. Let everybody else go and I’ll give you what you need.”
That was a lie of course, but he had to at least try. “Shut up,” the man said.
“Okay, okay, just trying to help you out. Three people is a lot to handle and once we meet up with Sebastian there’ll be four—“
The man leveled the barrel of his gun at Kensi’s chest. “Talk again and I pull this trigger.”
Deeks clamped his lips shut his mind running through the catastrophic damage a weapon like that could do at close range. They rode in silence for what he estimated was a half hour. The sounds outside the vehicle changed and he wondered if they were heading off into the Hawaiian wilderness. Isolation was not their friend.
At long last the van came to a stop and the engine turned off. He met Kensi’s eyes and she nodded in understanding; this might be their only chance.
The door slid open and Kensi shoved Katrina to the floor. Deeks kicked the man who’d been sitting with them and he went flying to the ground, his weapon firing wildly into the air. Jumping down after him Deeks struggled to grab the weapon.
He heard Kensi yell behind him and turned. The air left his lungs. He stumbled back and looked down to find blood on his shirt. Kensi was on her knees, bleeding from a head wound, looking at him in horror. “Deeks!”
That was when pain finally registered and he felt himself falling to the earth. He’d been shot. Again.
Kensi had jumped out of the van after her partner and been immediately hit in the head with the butt of a gun. It was enough to make stars explode before her eyes and send her to her knees. She watched as the man who’d struck her shot Deeks in the chest and then gasped when he grabbed her by the arm. Katrina was gripped in his other hand and he dragged them both to their feet and toward what appeared to be little more than a shack. “He needs help!” she yelled, doing her best to twist from the man’s iron grasp.
She and Katrina were roughly tossed to the floor and when she looked up it was to find a gun in her face. “Try anything and I’ll kill her,” he said moving it to point at Katrina who cringed away from him.
Kensi felt rage building beneath her panic. These assholes had managed to ruin not one, but two vacations and put two completely innocent people through trauma they would never forget, if they even made it out of here alive.
The door to the shed opened and the second man dragged Deeks inside, shoving him toward Kensi and Katrina. He groaned as he hit the ground. “Deeks, Deeks look at me!” Kensi moved so she was next to him, not caring what their captors thought as she inspected his wound.
“Ow,” he moaned.
Blood was oozing from the hole in his right shoulder and she could see the stain spreading across his shirt. “If he dies, you will have murdered an LAPD detective,” she said viciously. “They will hunt you down and they won’t care if they take you dead or alive.”
“Give us the Overwatch passcodes and he might live,” captor number one said. “We’ll give you a little time to think about it.”
“Wait, wait! Where is my boyfriend? What did you do to him?” Katrina asked desperately as they closed the door.
“Deeks, hey, how bad is the pain?” Kensi asked as she pulled open his shirt.
“Not bad,” he said breathlessly. “I’ve had worse.”
“Take a deep breath.” She rolled him onto his side and he let out a loud growl. “Okay, okay, I don’t see an exit wound so the bullet must be lodged against your collar bone.”
“Perfect,” he said through gritted teeth.
Kensi looked at their neighbor who had gone silent. “Katrina. Katrina!”
Katrina turned blank looking eyes her way. “He’s losing a lot of blood. I need you to find something to stop it. A cloth, tape, something that we can use to put pressure on it,” Kensi told her.
Katrina was slowly shaking her head and Kensi could tell she was about to fall apart. “Katrina!” she snapped the name out hard and the other woman jumped. “Go. You can do it.”
She nodded and moved to the other side of the shed, rifling through the shelves.
“You’re lucky he only had a Glock,” Kensi said grimly, using her hands to keep pressure on the wound.
“Lucky would be not having to worry about getting shot on vacation. Ah!” He groaned as she increased pressure.
“Sorry. This isn’t too bad but we need to get the bleeding stopped. Katrina!”
“This is all I could find.” She handed Kensi an old rag and some duct tape.
“It’ll work.” Kensi shoved the rag into Deeks’ hand. “Hold it there and I’ll tape it down.”
He held the wad of fabric tightly to his own injury, his eyes squeezed shut. Kensi ripped off long strips of duct tape and pressed it firmly into place making a makeshift bandage. “Ow!” Deeks yelled. “Damn it!”
“I know, I know, just breathe all right? You’re okay.” She said it as much to reassure herself as him. “Katrina, you okay?”
“What are we going to do?” she asked, her voice shaking.
“We’re going to get out of here,” Kensi said firmly even as her hands trembled. She tightened them into fists and looked around the room, trying to drown out the panic coursing through her veins. It was a small shack with one tiny window high up on the wall. It had clearly been used for storage of some kind; there were empty paint cans, tarps, and old buckets lying around. “We need to look around for anything we can use. Rope or old tools, things like that.”
She turned her attention back to Deeks who was breathing hard, sweat beading on his forehead. “You all right?” she asked.
He nodded. “Yeah. Just sit me up.”
He moaned as she helped him lean against the wall. “Don’t move,” she ordered as she went to help Katrina with the search.
“Not a problem,” he wheezed.
They didn’t come up with much; a handful of rope, a few nails, and a trowel, but nothing that would give them a significant leg up on their captors.
The door flew open and both men stomped inside. Kensi got to her feet, putting herself between them and her injured partner and a terrified Katrina. “Listen, you’ve dragged us all the way out here, I think we deserve some answers,” she said.
“The only person who’s going to be answering anything is you,” the first of the men said.
The both still had ski masks on but Kensi looked for differences in them, trying to get an idea of what they were dealing with. Both looked comfortable with their weapons and were well muscled, probably military trained. The second one was a little smaller and his gait was uneven, evidence of an old injury, the first clearly the leader of whatever the hell this was.
Kensi drew herself up to her full height. She would not show these men fear. “Then tell me what you want so we can get out of this mess.”
“You are Kensi Blye, Special Agent for NCIS?” Number One asked.
“You already know that.”
He looked around her to where Katrina stood. “Just making sure. We seem to have had a slight mix-up.”
She scoffed at him. “You call taking two innocent people hostage slight?”
“And he’s Detective Martin Deeks, LAPD?” He nodded toward where Deeks was curled against the wall.
“Present,” Deeks said, still cheeky even when in pain.
“Well now you know who we are, how about introducing yourselves,” Kensi said.
He ignored her. “Both of you have access to the Overwatch passcodes.”
Kensi glanced at Deeks, trying to determine how to answer that. “Yes,” she said finally. “As members of NCIS we have access to Overwatch.”
“Well that should make this easy then. Like I said before. We want your passcodes.”
“Why?”
He rolled his eyes. “Seriously? You think we’re going to tell you why? Your interrogation technique needs work.”
“Well so do your manners. Where’s Sebastian?”
“Listen Agent, the longer you stall us the longer we keep you here. You two ladies will be fine, but I’m not sure about the detective over there.”
Deeks looked pale and his breathing was more labored than before. She could see that the makeshift bandage she’d put on was growing dark with blood. She locked eyes with him and he shook his head, almost imperceptibly. She swallowed her fear for him and turned a fierce gaze on their captors. “I can’t give them to you.”

Top 5 Best Tonneau Covers for the RAM 1500
The RAM 1500 is designed for serious performance with a range of workhorse engines and versatile features, like the multifunction tailgate, to make easy work of your hauling and towing needs. This pickup truck is the perfect example of fine form meeting rugged function, designed to be durable, stylish, and practical. It is also the most luxurious truck in its class with impressive cabin technology, and safety and security features to give you peace of mind no matter where you go. Speaking of, one of the best “mods” you can do to further protect your truck is investing in a tonneau cover. A truck bed cover not only protects the bed itself from harsh elements and the environment, but also keeps your items safe from the hands of thieves. When properly engineered, tonneau covers can also reduce drag and improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
Vivid Racing carries a slew of different tonneau covers ranging from soft and hard covers in roll-up, fold-up, and retractable variants. With so many brands offering so many varieties of covers, it can be quite challenging to sift through the competition and find the best one for you. For this reason, we have compiled the following list of the top 5 best tonneau covers for the RAM 1500 to help you along. These are in no particular order, but boast important elements like durability, sleek styling, ease of use, and overall protection. The Best Bug Out Bag List (2018) – What You Need and Why You Need It!
It seems like putting together the best bug out bag list is one of those things that every preparedness website has to do. The thing that other sites often ignore is the fact that everyone has different needs and lives in different environments. This article will help you design the best bug out bag for you and your family!
This article is going to cover everything that we at Ready Lifestyle believe should be on every bug out bag list. Then we’re going to give you a range of options to fill those needs. By examining each section, you’ll be able to tailor a kit to meet your needs, no matter what they are, so you have the best list for you and your family.
Backpack
When choosing a backpack there are several things to take into consideration. If you live in an urban environment, choosing a backpack that does not appear tactical can be an advantage. For those of you that live in a rural environment, a tactical backpack may serve you better.
Regardless of the style of pack you choose, a subdued color is probably the way to go.
Osprey makes great packs in all colors, shapes, and sizes. This Aether AG 60 is designed for a week on the trail and comes with a removable top lid that can be used as a daypack.
Kelty is another well-known manufacturer of backpacks. The Kelty Redwing 44 is a little on the small side, but it would certainly work. It’s size also makes it less conspicuous compared to other hiking packs that are much larger.
This Teton pack is 55 liters and is the most affordable pack we’re looking at in this article at right around $60. The Teton Scout 3400 represents a sweet spot for cost, durability, and size. It’s fully adjustable and pretty close in size to the Osprey.
About the same size as the Kelty, the 5.11 Tactical RUSH72 has a ton of MOLLE webbing on the outside which allows for expansion if you really need it. Being on the tactical side of backpacks, it’s made of stronger, heavier material than the other packs and comes in several different subdued colors and camo patterns.
Shelter
Shelter can come in many forms. A lightweight backpacking tent may be the best option for some, for others, a tarp makes more sense as it can be a shelter and has other uses. It doesn’t matter what you choose, as long as you have a shelter in your bug out bag that makes sense for you.
A purpose made tarp, like this Chill Gorilla 10′ Rain Fly, makes a great shelter. You can also use it to waterproof your pack, collect rainwater, etc. They’re extremely versatile on top of being light and not taking up much space.
Water
Having a steady supply of water will be one of the things that you battle with first. The problem with water is that it’s heavy and takes up a lot of room.
With that in mind, we always recommend having some form of portable water filtration system in your bug out bag as well as several collapsible water containers with you.
The Katadyn Hiker Microfilter is one of the best handheld water filters available. It’s a little on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for. Something along these lines is important for any survival situation.
Collapsible canteens are nice because you can roll them up when they’re empty to save space in your bug out bag. I like these Nalgene canteens because you can stand them up when they have water in them. Not all of the collapsible canteens I’ve used will do that.
You can also add water purification tablets, or chemical disinfection kits since they take up very little room.
Aquamira makes several types of water purification chemicals. These water purification tablets would be a good addition to any go bag as a backup to other water collection tools.
This Aquamira Water Treatment kit in a bugout bag can treat up to 60 gallons of water. That’s far more water than you could ever carry!
Food
Freeze dried food weighs very little but takes a lot of water to rehydrate and cook.
The Mountain House Pro Pak is designed with backpackers in mind. Each pack is one meal and comes vacuum packed to be as light and compact as possible. They come in a wide variety of flavors, so anyone should be able to find something they would enjoy.
If you choose to carry canned food (which I don’t recommend) make sure you have a lightweight can opener like a P-51 or a multi-tool.
MREs are a great choice for an all in one meal that can be prepared with no outside equipment. If you decide to go with MREs you can strip them down and take out anything that you will not need. Take the food out of the boxes, remove the heaters (you could reuse them as a makeshift warmer if you live in a cold environment), get rid of the extra spoons, etc.
Putting Datrex Emergency Food Bars in your bug out bag is another option. They aren’t great, but they’re calories, take up very little space in a bag, last for a long time and don’t need to be prepared.
Clothing
The amount of clothing that you need to put on your list is minimal. When you’re determining what to pack, try to keep it light and non-bulky. In the end, you just need something to protect you from the environment that you’re likely to encounter.
You should have several changes of socks and underwear. This will let you change out the articles of clothing that come in direct contact with your body preventing chafing and blistering which can lead to discomfort and eventual infection when walking long distances. Keeping your feet dry on a long trek is one of the things that you should prioritize if you have to bug out.
The original Merrell Moab Mids are still among my favorite hiking boot.
Making sure your footwear is broken in is key. In a bug out scenario, blisters will slow you down considerably and possibly even leave you unable to walk. This will be even more apparent when you have the weight of your pack on your shoulders.
Gear Aid Tenacious Tape would be a great addition to any bug out bag. It’s an interesting product that could come in handy in a pinch. It’s specifically designed to seal leaks, rips, and tears in rubber, nylon, canvas and synthetic materials.
Light
A flashlight or headlamp is a necessity. A headlamp allows you to use your light source with both hands-free.
The Petzl Tactikka Headlamp has white light, strobe, and red light options. Be sure to read our review of what we believe is the best headlamp for the price.
You also may want to consider something like a small LED Lantern or glow sticks to act as an area light at night. There are also several small lanterns that Goal Zero makes which are great for lighting small areas at night.
I’m a big Goal Zero fan. The Torch 250 is a great area light that has a solar charger on one side and lantern on the other side. It also has a USB port that you can use to charge electronics and it can be charged from a USB port or a hand crank on the side.
Hygiene
Make sure you don’t overlook personal hygiene items. You need to be able to keep yourself clean especially if you end up living out of your bag for more than a couple days.
Normally a toothbrush, toothpaste, baby wipes, and a bar of soap will be enough to keep you clean.
A roll of toilet paper doesn’t weigh much, but it can take up a lot of space. If you run into this situation you can remove a portion of the toilet paper from the roll and put it in a Ziplock bag to save space.
Defense
Being able to defend yourself is extremely important in a bug out situation. What you decide to bring with you to defend yourself is going to depend upon where you live.
If you live in a rural environment then some form of light semi-automatic rifle is going to suit you best.
In my mind, a rifle should be the first weapon you reach for in any bug out situation. Even if you’re in the city, a short barreled AR-15 pistol is a much better choice for your bug out bag than a pistol in all ways other than concealability.
A pistol can be your best bet if you’re bugging out from a city or suburban environment. This allows you to conceal your firearm, drawing less attention to yourself. If you’re not concerned with drawing attention to yourself then a rifle on your bug out bag list is a better all-around choice.
Fire Making
One of the best fire making devices available to anyone is a simple Bic disposable lighter. They’re inexpensive, light and readily available almost everywhere.
Other than several disposable lighters you should consider packing a windproof lighter, ferrocerium rod, or waterproof matches in your bug out bag.
First Aid Kit
A good first aid kit is an absolute necessity. Make sure you don’t skimp in this area.
The list below is what I consider a minimum for a bugout bag first aid kit:
For normal cuts and scrapes, the Adventure Medical .7 First Aid Kit is great for this purpose because of its small size and the quality of the materials they pack in it.
The Adventure Medical Trauma Pak comes packed in a single compact bag and covers most of what you need to stop a heavily bleeding wound.
Adding an Ever Ready Battle Dressing (AKA Israeli Bandage) to your Adventure Medical Kit fills in some of the weaknesses of that kit.
The Combat Application Tourniquet is a standard when it comes to tourniquets. Tourniquets are a bad word in a lot of communities. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO USE ONE!
Cordage
Some form of cordage should be included in your go bag. Normally the go-to item for this is paracord. It’s light, doesn’t take up a lot of room and the inner threads can be removed from the outer sheath making, even more, cordage if needed.
Survival Knife / Axe
A quality fixed blade survival knife should also be part of your kit. Fixed blade knives are normally stronger and have better handles than folding knives. They tend to be better suited all around for survival situations.
If you’re going to put a folding blade on your list then make sure it has a solid lock up when it’s opened.
The Light My Fire Swedish FireKnife is a normal Mora knife with a ferrocerium rod in the handle. This is my go-to when I’m putting together any survival kit.
A lot of people think the idea of a survival axe is crazy, or inefficient. This is the Gransfor Bruk Wildlife Hatchet. It’s just over a foot long at 13″ and has a 1 lb. 3″ blade. The entire hatchet is under 1.5 lbs!
Navigation
Laminated maps of your local area, as well as a compass and a GPS, will allow you to find your way. Make sure you practice with the compass and understand how to use it! When you’re trying to navigate during a bug out situation it’s not the time that you should be first pulling out your compass.
The Garmin eTrex 10 is pretty bare bones when it comes to a modern GPS, but it has all the features you would need in a bug out situation.
Regardless of the GPS you select, you should definitely have one on your list.
Gloves
I always bring a pair of Mechanix Mpact Gloves. They’re light enough to give you a lot of dexterity and sturdy enough to stand up to pretty rigorous activity. The rubber coating on the knuckles and fingers really does help. I highly recommend them.
Money
In a bug out situation, it’s a good bet that society probably has not completely collapsed. This means that your money will still have value and you can potentially use it to buy items that you need along the way.
Identification
Having identification along with you will most likely make any encounters with the police or government go more smoothly. It’s lightweight so don’t forget to include it on your list.
Some form of identification could also be required if you decided to utilize emergency resources provided by a government agency like FEMA.
Electronics
We have quite a few things that need batteries and so far we don’t really have anything to recharge them with. That’s about to change.
The Goal Zero Venture 30 Solar Recharging Kit with Nomad 7 Solar Panel is a solar panel and battery pack. The battery pack gives you the ability to store the power that you gather during the day in order to charge electronics at night.
To charge AA and AAA batteries the Goal Zero Guide 10 is great. Just make sure that you have non-lithium rechargeable batteries.
A cell phone goes without saying. As long as the grid is up, your cell phone will continue to be an incredible asset to have. Make sure you have one in your bug out bag.
Wrapping Up Your List
Ultimately it’s up to each of us to come up with what the best tools are for us and our families. By reading through this article, and tailoring your list to your needs, you’ll be ready if you ever need to bug out.
Just like any other type of prepping, it’s important to not spend money that you may not have to put a bug out bag together.

As a gun owner, you will enjoy many rewards that come with being a responsible and competent carrier. Practicing effective and efficient shooting skills reduces the risk of injuring innocent people and also makes it easier for you to handle a crisis.
Gun owners today must practice many different scenarios, including when and when not to shoot until it become second nature or muscle memory.
When you have developed a sufficient level of muscle memory, you will have to think consciously about drawing your gun, aiming, or firing. Rather, once you know that you have to fire the gun, it will all happen in one fluid motion from start to finish.
From that perspective, practicing isn’t just about ensuring you can hit the target, it is about being able to evaluate and follow through as quickly as possible without making mistakes. Even though professional shooters make their actions look effortless, hours and years of practice go into their skills and marksmanship.
Here are some ways you can hone your skills at home using some basic devices and drills.
3 Second SEAL Test Will Tell You If You’ll Survive A SHTF Situation
The LaserLyte Training System
LaserLyte makes training kits that use a colored polymer pistol or revolver that looks and feels just like a handgun that you plan to carry. Instead of firing live ammunition, this gun fires a safe laser beam that will show up on the target. These kits can be used for drawing from concealment, target practice, or gallery shooting.
Types of training kits available (each contains your handgun replica of choice):
Laser Quick Tyme Kit –  The bulls eye target in this kit has a built-in timer that can be used in the on or off mode depending what your shooting requirements are.
Laser Steel Tyme Kit – contains two steel Tyme targets that make a metallic sound when you hit them.
Laser Rumble Tyme Kit – contains two can shaped laser targets that spin and make a rumbling sound when you hit them.
The laser Gallery Kit – contains one bulls eye target, one steel tyme target, and one rumbling can target.
Once you have mastered stationary shooting, you can adapt the system for shooting at moving targets. Did you know that you can use a Roomba vacuum cleaner, remote control truck, or other robotic devices to improve your shooting skills? Just put a laser target on top of it, pick a location to shoot from, and let the Roomba run around the room.
You can practice concealment, and use all different kinds of furniture for your drills. This includes shooting down from staircases, or other locations at head level or other heights of interest to you.
When you use the Roomba vacuum cleaner, you can be as creative as you like formulating drills. Since the Roomba’s activities can be quite random depending on how your furniture is arranged, you will also get to work a little bit on adrenalin control.
If there is a large barn or other large storage builds on the property, try using a drone to carry a laser target. With a good drone pilot, it is possible to make the target shooting training session into a custom training course for shooters.
With this type of target practice, you can work up from slow moving to faster ones, plus include plenty of variety. Or, if you need to work on your form, drill on the same patterns as much as you like.
Airsoft Pistols
Airsoft pistols are replica handguns that fire a plastic BBs. These pistols are designed after the most popular pistols of today to the point they are exact replicas, except there is a a RED ring on the barrel at the muzzle end.
You can shoot Airsoft guns in the house, garage, or outdoors. You will also find that Airsoft BBs are much cheaper than ammo you have set aside for practice at the range. To keep from losing the BBs either indoors or outside, I would recommend using a BB trap or a tarp behind the targets.
These pistols are fired either by spring action, automatic electric guns, or by gas.
Spring Action
Supplies you will need to shoot.
Ammunition- 6mm pellets.
Targets- shooters choice.
Eye protection- shooters choice.
These are the cheapest and lowest velocity of the Airsoft pistols.  To fire this pistol, you must:
Load the ammunition reservoir.
Pull back the slide or cocking lever back until the spring is all the way back and locked.
Aim and pull the trigger. When the trigger is pulled, it releases a piston that shoots forward through a cylinder at high speed and pressure. It is this pressure that pushes the BB out of the barrel.
Note: These pistols are very slow and must be cocked every time in to be fired. I would not recommend using them to shoot in semi-auto pistol practice.
Automatic Electric Guns (AEGs)
This firing system is good for automatic firing rifles or semi-auto pistols. These weapons use a small rechargeable battery to run a small electric motor.  This motor runs the sequencing gears, and operates the piston travel.
Supplies you will need to shoot:
Ammunition- 6mm pellets.
Targets- shooters choice.
Eye protection- shooters choice.
How the pistol operates when fired.
When the trigger is pulled, the electric motor activates, turning the piston gears, which pulls the piston back and loads the pistol.
Releases the piston to pressurize the cylinder.
Fires the BB down the barrel.
The trigger resets for the next shot.
Notes: Be sure the battery is fully charged and the BB reservoir is full.  Some of these pistols can simulate the recoil of the fired pistols.
Gas Blow-Back (GBB)
These Airsoft pistols use a compressed gas system to shoot the BBs out of the barrel. Many of these pistols have a gas blow-back feature that causes the slide on the pistol to slide backwards and return after being fired. These gas blow-back pistols are the closest of the three types of Airsoft pistols that feel like firing a real gun.
Supplies needed to shoot:
Ammunition- 6mm plastic pellets. Don’t be cheap, buy a good quality one without seams or cracks. Low quality pellets can damage the pistol.
Targets- Shooters choice.
Gas- There are three types of gas that can be used in the pistol. CO2, Propane, or Green gas (Propane gas that has silicone mixed in to self-lubricate the pistol.) If you use CO2, Propane or Green gas in cylinders a special converter will be needed to fill the magazine with the gas.
Eye protection- Shooters choice.
When the trigger is pulled, the gas activates, which pulls the piston back and loads the pistol, pressurizes the cylinder, fires the BB down the barrel and the trigger resets for the next shot.
Safety and Shooting Features of a Good Range
In order to get the most out of shooting at home, build a range where you can practice safely and without distraction, but keep the safety in mind. Here are a few things you can do to ensure your range is as safe as possible:
Build the range facing away from occupied dwellings.
Have a well-built back stop and barricade side walls that will stop all ammunition that will be used on the range.
Remove anything that might cause ricochets on the range.
Target stands to hold paper or steel gong targets.
Motor or hand operated moving targets.
Types of Shooting on Your Outdoor Range
Paintball
Paintball is a sport in which players compete in teams or individually to eliminate opponents by tagging them with paintballs fired from a paintball gun.  These games can involve role playing and be carried out in many kinds of terrain.
Paintball sports give your hands-on training at “shooting” someone without using ammo that can wound or kill.  It also gives you a chance to work on strategies and hone your skills while addressing adrenaline related matters.
Like all shooting sports, when using paintball guns, the competitors need to know the capabilities of their guns and what safety gear is necessary to protect them. The following is the basic equipment needed when using paintball guns.
A paintball gun kit of choice.
Paintballs will be the shooters choice.
Protective clothing
Chest protectors that are full wrap around to protect front, back, and sides.
Elbow and forearm pads.
Helmets or head wraps.
Goggles for eye protection.
Knee and shin pads.
Neck protectors.
Groin cup.
Gloves for your hands.
For players outer clothing:
Some individuals like to wear camo pants and shirts to better blend in with surrounding terrain.
Full body Ghillie suit for total camouflage.
Boots of your choice.
Live Fire- FBI Q Course
When I was a police officer, my department used the FBI “Q” course for pistol qualifications. This is a sixty round timed course that all FBI Agents must pass to complete the requirements to become an agent. It has since been adopted by many other departments at the national, state, and local levels. This course is not difficult, but it’s a good indicator of the shooters abilities.
Your minimum passing score will be fifty out of sixty in the center squares only in a certain amount of time. Anything outside of this square is counted as a miss. The time requirements give you enough time to shoot each section of the course. The shorter time limits are designed to add a little stress and to give you a baseline to keep from shooting too slowly.
Never forget that a gunfight is fast and very violent. The faster you can shoot accurately, the better chance you have of coming out alive.
Course of fire
Starting at the 3-yard line. You will need a magazine loaded with 12 rounds total. Re-holster after each part except number 3. Don’t re-holster between strong hand and weak hand portions.
Time limit 3 seconds. Draw and fire 3 rounds with your strong hand only.
Repeat 1.
Time limit 8 seconds. Draw and fire 3 rounds with your strong hand only. Then switch hands and fire 3 rounds with weak hand only.
Re-holster an empty pistol.
Move to the 5-yard line. You will need 12 rounds total. Two handed shooting is required from this point on.
There will be 4 repetitions of 3 seconds each. Draw and fire 3 rounds each. Re-holster after each 3 rounds portion.
After the fourth-round re-holster an empty pistol.
Move to the 7-yard line. You will need 16 total rounds. 12 rounds in the first magazine in the pistol. 4 rounds in the reload magazine.
Time limit 4 seconds. Draw and fire 4 rounds. Re-holster pistol.
Repeat 1. Re-holster pistol.
Time limit 8 seconds. Draw and fire 4 rounds (the gun is empty). Reload, fire 4 rounds.
Re-holster an empty pistol.
Move to the 15-yard line. You will need 10 rounds.
Time limit 6 seconds. Draw and fire 3 rounds.
Repeat 1.
Time limit 8 seconds. Draw and fire 4 rounds.
Re-holster an empty pistol.
Move to the 25-yard line (barricade shooting).
Time limit 15 seconds. You will need 5 rounds.
Draw and fire strong hand barricade.
Re-holster empty pistol.
Time limit 15 seconds. You will need 5 rounds.
Draw and fire weak hand barricade.
Re-holster empty pistol.
Build and practice in a Hogan’s Alley shooting range
Hogan’s Alley is any shooting range devoted to tactical shooting. These ranges are best known for teaching shooters when to shoot and when not to shoot. This is better known as Shoot Don’t Shoot Drills.
They can be very sophisticated with remote control target systems or as primitive as targets mounted on a wheeled carriage pulled along by ropes operated manually.
The Hogan’s Alley range is built to look like an average US small town or city street. Pop up targets can be used singly or in groups set at different ranges.
Video first seen on KRHAAS.
Remember to have a good mix of good guy and bad guy targets to keep the exercises interesting. When used in a Hogan’s Alley, set up pop-up targets to appear in windows, doorways, or looking over objects like cars, boats, or walls.
To keep the drills from getting boring, move the targets around to make different scenarios.
Gallery Range
The Gallery range can help the shooter to shoot different types of targets at different ranges. You can use tin cans, aluminum drink cans, or plastic bottles. These targets can be placed on a stump, suspended from frames or tree limbs, or just thrown into the target area at different distances from the firing line.
When the targets are different distances. This helps you judge distances better, hit the targets more often, and teaches you how much hold-over to use at different distances. When you can keep the targets dancing and bouncing with multiple hits, you will be well on your way to mastering this type of shooting.
When finished shooting for the day always go over the shooting area and take the brass and trash with you.
Wooden Target Stands
These target stands can be used to mount different types of paper targets at different distances from the shooting line. This is an excellent way to shoot a bull’s eye target or a “shoot don’t shoot” course of fire.
Auto-popper Steel Targets
These are steel targets that use springs to return hit targets to the upright shooting position. The targets come in many sizes of circles and animal shapes. The steel targets should be placed at different distances from the firing line and off known distances that are used regularly.
Ground Strike Targets
There are ground strike targets that are made of durable materials that can take hundreds of shots before being shot apart. They come in ball, animal, and jack shapes. When you are shooting on your range:
Learn to shoot from the standing, kneeling, sitting, or prone positions at different distances from 3-25 yards from the target or further.
Learn to shoot both strong and weak handed.
Learn to shoot from behind barricades.
Practice drawing, shooting, and reloading from each of the four positions.
Recording Your Sessions
When you are practicing at home and away from an instructor, you may not realize that you are making mistakes in both shooting form and other maneuvers.
Using a video recorder for your sessions will make it possible for you to compare your form, and discover mistakes that might otherwise prove fatal in an actual shootout.
While you may feel uncomfortable with video cameras at first, they are well worth what they will show you.
As a first time gun owner, it is very important to get the proper training. A gun is an excellent tool for self defense, and can also be used for sport and hunting.
If you don’t practice, even the best gun won’t make up for lack of experience and skill in shooting and evaluating targets. Practicing at home can give you cheaper alternatives, and also give you more time and privacy to work on your abilities and develop your survival mindset and skills.
